AZTEC, N.M. (Feb. 12) – While he already likes much of what he’s seen at Aztec Speedway, new owner and promoter Mike Hamilton has even bigger and better plans for the 3/8 mile oval.
“This already first class facility will benefit from new paint, drainage improvements and PA system upgrades for the stands and pits,” said Hamilton. “We will do major improvements to the racing surface. I don’t like one lane tracks and I don’t like rough tracks. I want to have a smooth and slick surface so it’s the driver and not the motor that decides who wins.”
“Aztec already has an AMB timing system, a scoring tower showing the top 10 cars in the race and superb lighting,” he added. “We want to see how nice this facility can be. We want to make car counts grow again.”
IMCA Modifieds, Southern SportMods and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars return to Saturday shows, with opening night set for April 11.
Two Friday shows and a Sunday program are on the schedule before Sept. 26 season championships.
The EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Modified Tour is at Aztec April 24-25. The Ryan Bard Memorial will be held May 23-24.
Safety barrier upgrades are in the works at Aztec and the Ryan Bard Safety Foundation will still be present to help promote safe racing for drivers and pit crews.
Volunteers from the Aztec and Flora Vista fire departments, equipped with state of the art fire extinguishing and extraction equipment, will work every weekly and special event.
“The monetary contributions made to these organizations by the track are very small when compared to the peace of mind that trained personnel with excellent equipment brings,” Hamilton said.
Transponders can be purchased by the drivers or rented but will be required in all IMCA divisions and can be purchased or rented at the track. Lap-by-lap results will be posted on mylaps.com.
While Hamilton plays a hands-on role as part of son Zach’s Southern SportMod crew, Bob Daily has been hired as director of both weekly and special events.
“IMCA has got the best rules going. They give us the biggest bang for the buck,” Hamilton said. “This cost effectiveness allows more drivers to be more competitive than any other sanction I know of.”
Modified points earned at Aztec figure toward ButlerBuilt Western Region standings, while Stock Car points apply in the Southern Region.
