PRICE, Utah (Feb. 4) – Three more IMCA divisions will be new to programs at Desert Thunder Raceway this season.
IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts join Modifieds and Southern SportMods at 10 shows scheduled at the 3/8-mile dirt venue.
Desert Thunder added the sanctioned Modifieds in 2007 and the Southern SportMods last year. The IMCA Stocks, Hobbies and Sport Compacts replace non-sanctioned classes at Price, the first track in Utah to sanction any of the three.
“We have had these types of cars running here but have struggled coming up with rules they can run by. We want to have the same rules here that they can run under at other tracks,” promoter Harvey Howard said. “We decided to go with the SportMods last season and this year we will have as many as 10 new cars being built. I feel that will happen in the other classes and hopefully we’ll be able to bring in more drivers from around the area.”
“When we sanctioned the Modifieds, we told drivers in other classes that if they were building new cars, they needed to look ahead to when we sanctioned them with IMCA,” added Howard, who worked out 2009 race dates with EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Modified Tour Director Ken Hansen and fellow promoters from Diamond Mountain Speedway in Vernal and Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez, Colo. “Now is the right time for us to do that.”
All five divisions open the season at Desert Thunder with a Friday and Saturday, May 8-9 doubleheader. The Wild West Modified Tour is in town June 12 and 13.
The point season ends with the Sept. 25-26 Castle Country Clash special. Modifieds race for $1,000 to win on opening night and $1,500 to win in the second show, with a $1,500 bonus going to the driver with the top two-day point total.
Stock Car and Hobby Stock points earned at Price will figure in Southern Region standings for the respective divisions. Desert Thunder is part of the ButlerBuilt Western Region for Modifieds.
