AMARGOSA, Nev. (Jan. 24-25) – Justen Yeager held off Brad Pounds to win Saturday’s Best of the Best Wild West Showdown feature at Death Valley Raceway. Pounds returned the favor on Sunday. Yeager took his second IMCA Modified checkered flag of the series in the opener, working his way up from the third row to edge Pounds in the sprint to the finish. With a faster track on Sunday, Pounds dropped down a line late in the contest and sped by Ricky Alvarado and Yeager for his first win of the season. Lance Mari and Roy Spielman ran at the head of the Saturday pack, with Yeager catching Spielman and then Mari on the 10th circuit and leading the rest of the way. Following Pounds across the stripe were Mari, Kenny Kirkpatrick and Robert Miller. Yeager and Alvarado were running the top groove on Sunday when Pounds ducked lower following a re-start with six laps left and pulled side-by-side with Yeager at the front. He’d pulled ahead coming out of turn two and stayed in front the rest of the way. Jason Donnelly, Paul Stone and Alvarado rounded out the top five. Yeager had also run first and second in series-opening shows Jan. 3-4 and now owns 98 IMCA career wins. Pounds has 49 sanctioned victories to his career credit and joins Yeager among 70-plus candidates for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. The Best of the Best Wild West Showdown concludes Feb. 14-15.
