AMARGOSA, Nev. (Jan. 3-4) – Two frequent visitors to victory lane added to their resumes with opening weekend wins in Death Valley Raceway’s Best of the Best Wild West Shootout Series for IMCA Modifieds.
Justen Yeager notched IMCA career win number 97 in the Saturday show and Robert Miller scored a $1,000 win of his own on Sunday. Both were already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.
The seventh starting Yeager raced his way to third early in the weekend’s first 25-lapper, but turned his car around as he entered turn one on lap eight, necessitating a caution and relegating him to re-start the event at the tail.
Roy Spielman maintained the fast pace before his engine quit on the frontstretch near midway, handing the lead over the Dustin Jenks with determined customers Paul Stone and Yeager.
Stone was briefly in front before slipping high, putting Jenks back at the point. Jimmy Lust chased Jenks for three circuits before running out of fuel with four laps left.
Yeager finally caught Jenks with two laps to go and held on for the win. Sean Minor and Regan Tafoya were both disqualified from top five finishes after coming up light on the post-race scales.
After a disappointing 22nd place finish on Saturday, Miller bested the Sunday field in an elderly Harris Chassis.
Ricky Alvarado was the early leader but broke on the fifth lap and Miller led to the checkers. The last 13 circuits ran green and Miller had caught up to the back of the pack with seven laps to go.
Yeager chased Miller to the line in second with Tafoya capping off a solid third place run. Kirkpatrick was fourth.
The six-race series continues with doubleheaders Jan. 23-24 and Feb. 14-15.
