MOHAVE VALLEY, Ariz. (Dec. 17) – Sixteen races at tracks in Arizona, California and Nevada comprise the inaugural Rotating Right Wild West Southern Tour for IMCA Modifieds in 2009.
The series was created to complement the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour and will operate under the same rules and procedures. All events with 40 or more entries will pay $1,000 to win and are qualifiers for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot; events with fewer than 40 entries will pay $750 to win.
A point fund of $3,000 will be paid to the top 10 drivers in final point standings. IMCA national, ButlerBuilt Western Region and Smiley’s Racing Products State points, as well as special series points will be awarded.
Newly re-sanctioned Canyon Speedway Park will host the series-opening doubleheader in February.
The tour travels to Imperial Valley Raceway, Mohave Valley Raceway, Death Valley Raceway, Ocean Speedway, Bakersfield Speedway and Prescott Valley Raceway over the course of the season. The series is scheduled to end with a Sept. 18-19 twinbill at Mohave Valley.
“The success of the original Wild West Modified Tour the last two years got a lot of people thinking about another doing something similar at new tracks,” explained Ken Hansen, who has served as director of what will now be called the WWMT Northern Series since its inception. “The Southern Tour will allow more drivers to compete for IMCA points and to do so closer to home.”
Hansen will become director for both series. Cory Simoneau will be the official in charge at each Southern Series event.
Point standings in the two series will be kept separately and champions will be crowned in each. Both drivers will be added to the Fast Shafts All-Star ballot for 2010.
Top 20 drivers in point standings for both the Rotating Right Southern Tour and the EQ Cylinder Heads Northern Tour will be eligible to compete in special Shootout races next November, during the Duel In The Desert special at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Top 10 finishers in each Shootout advance to a special WWMT race that weekend.
Title sponsor Rotating Right is based in Edmonton, Alb., and manufactures a product line that includes portable generators.
