BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. (June 15-16) – Flag to flag runs put $1,000 in the pockets of Zane DeVilbiss and Cory Sample, in midweek IMCA Modified dates for the Evenson Law Office Iron man Challenge Series at Battle Mountain Raceway.
DeVilbiss led green to checkered on Wednesday and Sample duplicated the feat on Thursday. Both features doubled as EQ Cylinder Heads Wild west Tour dates and 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifiers.
Randy Artz ran second all the way in the opener. Dan Fitzgerald passed Ryan Cotrell for third on lap 19 and “B” winner Justen Yeager took over fourth with nine circuits left.
Yeager was the hard charger, passing 10 cars.
Bouncing back from a rough outing the previous evening, Sample saw his luck do a 180 with a 30-lap run at the front on Thursday.
Cotrell settled into the runner-up position on lap two and wound up crossing the stripe less than half a second off the winning pace. Don Baisch enjoyed a long run in third before Fitzgerald found a way past on lap 21. Yeager was fifth.
Twenty of the 24 cars in the main event finished on the lead lap.
A stacked fourth heat saw 2009 series champion Yeager win in front of defending national, Butler Built Regional and tour king DeVilbiss and four-time regional titlist Fitzgerald.
The EQ wins were the career eighth for DeVilbiss and the second for Sample. DeVilbiss was also the winner in the first Ironman event, on June 9 at Rattlesnake Raceway.
