CORTEZ, Colo. (Aug. 12-13) – The race for the 2011 EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour title just got more interesting.
Defending champion Zane DeVilbiss won both IMCA Modified series events Friday and Saturday at Fairgrounds Speedway, putting a pair of $1,000 checks in his pocket and paring Justen Yeager’s lead in the standings to just seven points.
The two will decide bragging rights when the tour concludes with a Sept. 16-17 twinbill at Atomic Motor Raceway.
Pole starter Rick Spangler led the first nine circuits on Friday before giving way to DeVilbiss, who would lead to the end of the 30-lapper.
Danny Bradford, Ricky Alvarado and Chase Hansen were in and out of the second spot before Brandon Carley moved in for good with six laps to go.
Bradford, Mark Rodgers and Alvarado completed the top five. Alvarado had qualified for the main event out of his “B” race and advanced 13 positions to claim hard charger honors.
A late-race collision between front runners Dustin Hansen and his brother Chase opened the door for DeVilbiss on Saturday.
DeVilbiss was mired in third when the Hansens got together in lapped traffic with four to go. Jeff Taylor, Porter Smith, Austin Black and Alvarado chased him to the checkers.
Dustin Hansen had started on the pole and caught Alvarado for the front spot on lap four; Chase Hansen was in and out of second starting on lap five before settling in for a long run behind his brother.
The fifth starting DeVilbiss supplanted Alvarado in third before midway. Hard charger was Wade Taylor, who advanced 14 spots to end in seventh.
With his third and fourth wins of the 2011 tour, DeVilbiss moved up on the series career wins list with 11 to Yeager’s total of 10. He’s now second to Alvarado, who has 23 EQ WWMT checkers to his credit.
Yeager, the 2009 series champ, had taken a 20 point advantage over DeVilbiss into the Cortez doubleheader. Both drivers are on the ballot for the 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.
