2011 WWMT YEAR IN REVIEW
By: Wild West Modified Tour
The 2011 EQ IMCA Wild West Modified Tour season is in the books. There was a lot of "firsts" in 2011 as, the series had its first rain out in 59 races on April 23 in Aztec, some first time winners, and also the return of Aztec Speedway to the schedule after not having a WWMT event since April of 2009.
In the 12 race schedule that went across Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada, the average car count came out to be 40 cars with 126 different drivers competing.
With that said, the championship chase came down to the final race between 2009 champion and 2010 champion, Justen Yeager of Green River, Wyoming and Zane DeVilbiss of Farmington, New Mexico
2009 EQ IMCA Wild West Modified Tour champion, Justen Yeager led the points going into Atomic City by seven points over DeVilbiss, but, Yeager went to victory lane both nights in Atomic. DeVilbiss took 2nd the first night but his push to win his second consecutive championship disapeared as he was involved in a early race accident the final night.
Justen won his second championship by thirty points over DeVilbiss and ties Ricky Alvarado (2007 & 2008 champion) for the most WWMT Championships.
Yeager is also known as "Mr. Consistency" as he holds an amazing stat of 38 straight top nine finishes. It all started on April 24, 2009 in Aztec, New Mexico.
The champion, Yeager scored three feature wins in 2011 as he won at his home track in Rock Springs, Wyoming in July, then swept the weekend at the Atomic Motor Raceway in Atomic City, Idaho, but, he did not win the most races in 2011.
2010 champion, Zane DeVilbiss won a total of four features in 2011 and it all started at the Battle Mountain Raceway in Battle Mountain, Nevada in June, he then picked up his first win at the Sweetwater Speedway in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and he swept both races in Cortez, Colorado in August.
Other feature winners in 2011 were, Travis Metz of Blackfoot, Idaho in Price and Cory Sample of Winnemucca, Nevada earned his second career win in Battle Mountain, Nevada. The place where he earned his first. Drivers that earned their first career wins were Porter Smith in Aztec and Michael Hale in Price.
The special event winners were Zane DeVilbiss who won the WWMT All-Star Race in Price, Utah in September during the Castle Country Clash, Wade Taylor won the WWMT All-Star Last Chance Qualifier the night before, Cory Sample won the 2011 WWMT Top 20 Showdown in Las Vegas, Nevada in November during the Duel in the Desert, and Casey Delp and Bobby Lewis won the Inaugural WWMT Pit Crew Challenge in Cortez, Colorado.
