2012 WWMT Year in Review

The 2012 EQ IMCA Wild West Modified Tour had another great season as the series seen new winners, drivers return to victory lane after long win-less streaks, a new track host the season opener, and also, the return of the Diamond Mountain Speedway to the WWMT schedule.
The series had 10 races scheduled in Idaho, Nevada, Utah, & Wyoming. The series did not travel to Colorado in 2012. This is the first time since the inaugural season in 2007, the series has not been to Colorado.
Only 8 races were completed on the schedule after the final weekend was canceled. 88 different drivers competed in 2012 with an average of 41 cars.
Justen Yeager of Green River, Wyoming took home his third WWMT championship in 2012. He beat Zane DeVilbiss of Farmington, New Mexico by 35 points.
The battle for the championship came down to the final race of the season at the Atomic Motor Raceway in Atomic City, Idaho on August 24th and 25th. Zane DeVilbiss picked up his first win of 2012 on Friday and Aaron Spangler won the final race on Saturday. Yeager was able to clinch the championship that weekend.
Justen Yeager picked up two wins in 2012. He won the co-joint WWMT / Iron Man Challenge race at the Great Basin Raceway in Ely, Nevada in June and he picked up the other one at the Diamond Mountain Speedway in Vernal, Utah in July.
First time winners of 2012 were David Karst of Mills, Wyoming and Will Brack of Mead, Colorado. They won features at the Sweetwater Speedway in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
Sweetwater Speedway was the series opener which was in May 2012. This is the first time the series had the opener in the state of Wyoming. In years past, it has been in Utah or New Mexico.
The drivers that had long win-less droughts were Aaron Spangler and Ricky Alvarado. Spangler picked up the win at the co-joint WWMT / Iron Man Challenge Series race at Great Basin Raceway in Ely, Nevada in June and Alvarado won the second night in Vernal, Utah at the Diamond Mountain Speedway in July.
Spangler's last win came at the Desert Thunder Raceway in Price, Utah in June 2009. Alvarado's last WWMT win came at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez, Colorado in August 2009.
The special event winner was Chase Hansen of Myton, Utah as he won the WWMT All-Star Race at the Millard County Raceway in Delta, Utah in October. The race was 50 laps. The series did not have the Top 20 Showdown, nor the Pit Crew Challenge.
The series Rookie of the Year award went to Andy Strait of Elko, Nevada. Second was Gordon Kelson Jr., and third was Ronnie Roy. Both of Wyoming.
