ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (June 7-8) – Ricky Alvarado and Michael Hale were feature winners in the opening doubleheader for the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour at Sweetwater Speedway.
Alvarado scored his IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified series best 25th victory Friday at Rock Springs. Hale earned his second career WWMT triumph after qualifying from his “B” race on Saturday.
Both events paid $1,000 to win and both Alvarado and Hale were already on the ballot for the 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Forty-two cars vied on opening night, 45 on Saturday.
Alvarado started third and led all 30 laps of the Friday feature. The single caution that came near midway erased his sizable advantage but the 2007 and 2008 series champion pulled ahead again.
Three-time and defending tour king Justen Yeager took over second late in the contest but couldn’t reel in the leader.
“The car was really good in (turns) three and four. The track had a little bit of rubber down low and I found that right away,” Alvarado said. “It was pretty cool to get my 25th series win and this was the first time I’d ever won on XSAN. That was a pretty neat deal.”
Rounding out the top five were Brian Ungaro, Ryan Cotrell and Casey Delp. Hard charger Ron Moser improved 14 positions to ninth.
Hale brought his “A” game to Saturday’s main event after winning the second “B” feature and starting 14th.
He ran the high side most of the way, taking the lead 12 circuits into the 30-lapper. Delp got under following a restart but another yellow was quickly out and Hale was more aggressive when the race went green again and took away the lower line.
Delp stayed within hailing distance before falling to four car lengths back at the checkers. Troy McElroy, hard charger Randy Artz and Alvarado completed the top five.
“I was worried about making the show. I don’t like B’s,” Hale admitted. “This was our first win in five starts in a new GRT. We’ve been knocking on the door with all top five’s and we finally got in. The Wild West Tour has got a lot of good drivers and I’m pleased to be able to compete with these guys.”
Artz improved 19 places from his original starting spot.
IMCA SportMods joined the tourney fray both nights. Shane Simper started fifth and finished first on Friday while 11th starting Gauge Smith topped the Saturday show.
