Defending series champs Spangler, Alvarado top IMCA Modified main events at Great Basin

ELY, Nev. (June 28-29) – Inches made the difference between first and second when two defending IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified series champions battled all the way to the finish Friday night at Great Basin Raceway.
Aaron Spangler eked out the victory over Justen Yeager by the slimmest of margins in the 30-lapper, part of both the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour and the Evenson Law Office Iron Man Challenge Series.
After a tough opening night, Ricky Alvarado raced from 10th starting to win the Saturday feature at Ely. Both races paid $1,000 to win and both winners were already on the 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.
Spangler, the top driver in Iron Man points last season, started outside pole on Friday and led the first 18 circuits before giving way to son Brody.
The younger Spangler was scored first across the stripe the next nine times around the oval, finally giving way to his father and Yeager.
Yeager made the finish about as close as it could be, with electronic scoring showing him just .009 behind at the checkers.
“That’s the closest finish I’ve had. Without electronics I don’t know how you would have scored it,” Spangler said following his IMCA career 133rd win. “I didn’t know I’d won it until they came on RACEceiver and told me.”
Brody Spangler piloted his dad’s 2012 ride to third. Casey Delp and Wade Taylor rounded out the top five while Alvarado was the hard charger, advancing 15 positions to finish seventh.
“I thought Brody had it won,” said Spangler, who’d broke his left front brake line early on. “He’s been running really good this year and I was cheering for him.”
Alvarado made his way toward the front even fast on Saturday than he did Friday, racing from 10th starting to second by lap four. He caught pole starter Zane DeVilbiss on lap seven and stayed in front to the checkers.
Working his way through lapped traffic in the late going, Alvarado racked up WWMT career win number 26 ahead of DeVilbiss, Yeager, Taylor and Troy McElroy.
“We hit on something right. The car was just perfect,” he said. “It did everything it was supposed to.”
Dustin Hansen moved up a dozen spots to eight. McElroy, Richard Anderson and Bryan Wardelman were all plus-10 on the night.
Justin Wright was the IMCA SportMod winner on Friday while Jake Rice took the Saturday checkers.
Temperatures were in triple digits both days at Ely.
