MOHAVE VALLEY, Ariz. (March 1) – Brad Pounds and Justen Yeager both reached career win milestones, while a pair of top four finishes helped Mark Allison secure the championship of Mohave Valley Raceway’s Winter Days of Thunder Series for IMCA Modifieds.
Pounds topped Saturday’s 30-lap feature for his 50th career sanctioned victory. Yeager then became the 29th driver in division history to reach the 100 career win mark on Sunday, beating Pounds across the stripe by half a car length.
Both checkers were good for $1,000. Allison ran third in the opening show and fourth in the finale for a nine point edge over Pounds and Phil Penney in the final series standings.
Pounds drew the pole for the first show and led all 30 laps despite Yeager’s best efforts to dislodge him from the front spot.
After working his way into contention from the 10th starting spot, Yeager threatened on the 12th circuit before Pounds moved down from the highest line.
The California speedster held Yeager in check the rest of the way, winning by four car lengths. Allison, Jeff Sheppard Jr. and Penney rounded out the top five.
Pounds and Yeager battled it out again on Sunday after taking the initial green from the fourth row.
Yeager was in first by the time the fifth lap was scored and had the field covered before a caution near mid way bunched everyone back up.
Sticking to the low groove all the way around while Pounds went high in the first set of turns and down the backstretch, Yeager maintained his tenuous grip on the lead as the laps counted down. Ben Seidler, Allison and Penney followed Pounds at the finish.
Five events comprised the second annual series. Allison, Pounds and Yeager were already on the 2009 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot going into the final weekend.
