PEORIA, Ariz. (Feb. 21-22) – Guy Norton and Ricky Alvarado took similar routes to the same destination in winning IMCA Modified feature events in the inaugural Rotating Right Wild West IMCA Modified Southern Tour doubleheader.
Norton dominated Saturday’s main event at Canyon Speedway Park after starting outside row one, while Alvarado led the distance in topping the Sunday show. Both events at Peoria paid $1,000 to win and Norton’s victory, his first sanctioned checkers in 15 years, landed him on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.
Alvarado is the two-time defending champion in the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Northern Tour and is already on the ballot. The win was his first of 2009.
Fifty Modified drivers vied in both programs.
Completing Saturday’s top five were Alvarado, Jay Foster, Kevin Brown and Marlyn Seidler.
Ricky Thornton Jr., Jason Noll, Seidler and Clay Daly chased Alvarado across the stripe on Sunday. The next five finishers, Troy Cook, Paul Stone, Bo Hatfield. John Cox and Norton, all made their way into the big dance from their “B” features.
Justin Thornton outran brother Ricky to take the Saturday Southern SportMod checkers, then finished seventh on Sunday in capturing the Winter Challenge Series for that open wheeled class.
James Webster prevailed in the second SportMod feature of the weekend.
The tour next travels to Imperial, Calif., Valley Speedway for a Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15 double header.
Both features pay $1,200 to win, with a $600 bonus for the driver with the top point total from what doubles as Imperial’s annual Armstrong-Evans Memorial Classic.
Pit gates open at 10:30 a.m., hot laps follow 12:45 p.m. drivers’ meetings and racing starts at 2 p.m. both days.
